"jesus brought us a babysitter" and other sayings

Harper, Kate and I were reading in Harper's room the other day and we came across A is for Angels.  This is an adorable book her Mimi gave her and Harper loves to look at the angels.  I talk to Harper about Jesus, but I think she is just starting to get that Jesus is good, if you know what I mean.  So we were reading H is for Hannah and how God gave Hannah a baby and Harper got so excited and shouted, "Jesus gave us a baby Kate!"  It was so funny how excited she was.  Then she said, "maybe one day, Jesus will give me a baby too!"  How sweet is that!?  So then yesterday I was sitting in the living room talking with Brian about babysitters and out of nowhere Harper said, "Jesus brought us a babysitter!"

So what else are the girls saying these days?

Harper:
I will grow up tomorrow.

Then we can go to Target and get a special treat together! (when I go over our errands with her)
Are we going to the ice cream factory?
Oakie-nokie (still for oatmeal)
One day I will grow up and be big like you mommy.
I will marry Ryder.

Kate:

mommy
da-da
apple

Pop

various animal sounds:  panting for a dog (hilarious!), hiss for snake, and "eow" for cat

I can't wait to hear them conversing with one another!  Kate dotes on every word Harper says already and they are so cute playing together so I think it'll be hilarious hearing their conversations.

Harper's 1st day of Preschool, 2012

Harper started preschool today!  She was so excited.  We lay in her bed early this morning talking in the dark about her big day.  We practiced saying "yes, ma'm" and introducing herself as Harper Wallace to her new friends and teacher.  She is just too cute.  I gave her a special new dress (from consignment-gotta love that) to wear and she was tickled to have the attention.

Whenever Harper lines up or sits for a picture, Kate jumps in right away with a big grin!

She had fun taking a million pictures and started getting a little silly.

Here's Harper at her school in front of the big tree.

Here's Harper last year on the first day of "school."

Summer's End

This was our last day of summer vacation.  Harper starts preschool on Monday morning and I honestly CAN'T WAIT!  Ha!  We need our routine back for sure and I'm am so looking forward to it.  We spent the week eating snowballs at the pool, playing at parks, kayaking, riding our bikes to the new frozen yogurt place, and swimming at a local beach.  Here's to a great summer!

Harper at 3 1/2

Harper Rose, you are 3 and a half!  Every day you are growing up and we have a little girl before us.  You are so beautiful and I can't believe you are ours.  I love to look at your baby pictures and compare them to you now.  I'm just amazed by you.

At 3 1/2 you
  • Weigh 30 pounds.  You are ALL muscle, girl.  You are average height, but thin and muscular.
  • You are a jumping bean!  You have so much energy.
  • You are FAST!  Everywhere we go, people say, "wow, she's fast! sign her up for track as soon as you can."  This makes me laugh:  your dad and I met running track.
  • You sleep in a big girl bed!
  • You love: eating, running, jumping, gymnastics, soccer, animals, singing, and dancing.
  • You are eating all of your veggies like a big girl.  You do not like spicy food and you of course love sweets.
  • Did I mention you are fast?  You don't nap any more and I don't know how you go go go all day long.  I'm worn out!
  • You climb all over the furniture like a monkey and I'm always saying, "get down" or "be careful!"
  • You started gymnastics and you're pretty good.  I love watching you on the bars.
  • You play soccer at SoccerTots and LOVE it!
  • Georgia is one of your best friends.  Before we leave the house, you give her a hug and kiss and say, "be a good girl-we'll be back."  She lays by your bed until you fall asleep, you play tug of war with her, and she lets you dress her up and climb all over her.  I'm so glad you have a sweet dog in your life and that she has you in her life.
  • You are a singer, girl!  Ha!  It cracks me up.  Your favorite songs right are, "Baby" and "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber. It isn't my fault-you saw a 5 second clip on a commercial and begged me to play it for you.  Which leads me to say that you have quite an ear for music (thanks to daddy).  You were running around singing Rhiana's melody to (with the wrong words:  "spin round in a hopeless place?").  You are so theatrical about your singing too.  You pick up the tone and act it all out.  It is a trip!  Your past favorite songs are by Mayer Hawthorne, Katy Perry, Miley Sirus, and Lady Gaga.  Trust me, I try toddler tunes and you're totally put off.
  • You are the BEST BIG SISTER.  Harper, you are so kind to others, especially Kate.  You yell things like "don't touch my sister!" when we are playing.  You tickle her, kiss her, climb in her bed in the morning, peek-a-boo to her, and anything to make her smile.  I LOVE IT!  She just adores you and it warms my heart to see the two of you so close.  I couldn't ask you to be a better big sister.  We crack up at Kate together and you always chime, "Kaaaaate" or "Katy-bug!"  Priceless.
  • You are practicing writing your name and tracing letters.  You're obsessed with "H" and point it out on license plates, menus, and anything you see.  It is cute.
  • You can count to 20, trace letters, identify letters, speak some spanish (thank you, Dora).

You can be sassy and have a way of saying "no" quite a bit lately.  It can be frustrating and I'm working hard at keeping my cool with you.  Ha!  You are so beautiful, Harper.  I love your blond curly hair and your blue-green eyes.  But, I am mostly proud of how sweet you are.  I love your kind heart more than your athleticism, brains, or looks.

Newport: annapolis on steroids

Last month, our family of four boarded a Southwest plane, flew for 45 minutes, and landed right back in Annapolis-or so it seemed.  We went to Annapolis on steroids-We went to Newport, RI for the Newport Folk Music Festival at Fort Adams State Park.  We stayed at The Mill Stree Inn, an old mill turned boutique hotel.  Our room was WONDERFUL!  We had a loft for sleeping and bathing and a living room on the lower floor.  There was also a private rooftop deck off of our room, with a view of the water.  With the girls, it was nice having such a great place for downtime.  Like a dummy, I took zero pictures of our hotel, but here is a snap from their website.  This was our upstairs.  We were also right in the middle of downtown.  It was a perfect place.

We had a great time with our friends, the Rossos and the Abruzzos, and all of the kids.  Every time we ate, we laughed at our "6 adults and 5 children, please."  The kids were so good and had fun playing with one another.  We had a little bit of rain, but we made it work thanks to rain coats and double strollers.

Kate is attached to my hip these days!  She just wants to do everything with me and love on me all of the time.

That's okay...one day she'll want nothing to do with me and just play with her friends all of the time.

Harper and Ryder were once again inseparable.  They danced and played the whole weekend.  The last thing Harper said before bed and the first thing she said when she woke up was, "where's Ryder?"  They are best buds and play so well together.

One morning we went to look at some of the mansions in Newport.  Newport is famous for its "summer cottages" of the early 20th century.  A couple were built by the Vaderbilts, if that tells you anything.  They are out of control HUGE!  I've never seen homes this big in my life.  What's more, the properties are enormous and immaculate as well.  All of the mansions have been donated to the historical society and they give tours daily.  This was the Elms.  We didn't go in, but we walked around the property and peeked in its giant windows.  It is one of the biggest of the mansions-the other being The Breakers, where The Great Gatsby of the 70's was filmed.

Can you imagine waking up and having breakfast on the back porch?

We kind of trespassed without knowing it.  Who me?

The gardens were perfectly groomed and beautiful!!!

They had these gazebos out of The Sound of Music-you know, the "I am 16 scene?"  No?  I'm the only dork who loved that movie?  Oh well, moving on.

The trees on the property were mostly imported from Europe.

After we walked ran around the property, the girls were wiped and ready to go.  Don't they looked thrilled to take another picture?

I look forward to going back to Newport one day soon.  We had fun, but with the festival, we missed a lot of the town.  Next time we are going to rent a car and see the seaside and visit more of the mansions.  Newport is misty, laid back, beautiful, and charming.  It makes you slow down-just what we needed.

Chef Harper

Harper and I made red white and blue strawberries for Independence Day.  She cooks like my grandmother did-tasting along the way.  She kept saying, "I need to taste...mmm that's good."  She has my grandmother's sass too.

4th of July, 2012

When we returned from the wonderful beach, we were thrilled to have Mimi and Pop come stay with us!  Unfortunately, mother nature was not kind to us and our power was out for 3 days in 100 degree weather.  After the kids, Brian and I camped out in the basement for a few nights, the Wallaces took a chance and flew in despite reports that we wouldn't have power for another week.  We all resolved to have a good time and make it work.  Wouldn't you know it we went out to eat that night (remember, we had no stove or oven?-ha!) and when we came home the power came on as we pulled into the driveway.

We were so excited!

Anyway, moving on.  We had a great time visiting with Mimi and Pop.  The most fun was the parade on the 4th of July.  Our town has the best parade.  It is about an hour and a half long and is so entertaining and patriotic.  Pop had a great idea from last year and decorated the wagon for the girls.  He and Harper were out there all morning getting it ready.  The girls looked adorable in it!!!!

These square dancers were my favorite part.  They were so good and I was cracking up at thinking how dizzy I would be spinning on a moving trailer.

It was SO hot!  We kept cool in the shade.  And what would the 4th of July be without ice cream?

We went to the same spot near the square for some shade and it was just a perfect time.  Then we spent the rest of the day at the pool.
