The Outer Banks, 2012

We had the best time at the end of June going to the beach in the Outer Banks.
We planned and found a big house, Coral Castle, across the street from the beach in Nags Head.  For our 4 families that included 9 adults and 7 kids all under the age of 4, it was perfect.  It had a bedroom and bathroom for each family plus Natalie, our babysitter that we brought, a pool, a hot tub, a tiki bar, tis, surround sound throughout the house, and a giant dining room table.  We were also 3 doors down from the ice-cream shop, which was fun for the kids after a long day at the beach.  If we go back to Nags Head with a group, I'm booking this house again.  It was awesome!

We left at 4:30 in the morning to avoid DC summer traffic (it is INSANE) and made it there by 10:00.  We met up with our group, The Rossos, The Abruzzos, and the Resnicks.

On our first day, we played some miniature golf while we waited for our 1:00 check in.  Then we went to the store to load up on food for the week.  Each family cooked one meal for the week and then we ordered pizza, got crabs, and went out to dinner on the other nights.

After we checked in and unpacked, we hit the beach.  We set up two tailgate tents for the week and those were life-savers for all of the kids.  The babies, especially, were cool under the shade but could still play in the sand.

Harper was shy on the first day about the water.  She wouldn't go near it, really.  That was fine by me.  She should have some fear of the ocean.  But by the end of the second day she was having a blast chasing waves with all of the boys.  To say she was worn out by 7:00 every night is an understatement.

Kate spent her days digging in the sand and eating snacks with Maddy in the shade.  She slept well in her pack and play, especially considering we were all in the same room.

I don't think I ever loved the beach as much as I did on this trip.  You've never really lived until you've taken your kids to the beach.  Sure, you're busy and running around, but it is just a blast watching them have so much fun.  Having the kids' friends there made a big difference too.  They all played so well together and kept one another company.

I have plenty more pictures to post later-of the sand dunes and kites, of the aquarium, and some other special memories we made.  What a great vacation!
