lovie dovie

I had pedicures with the Essie color Lovie Dovie before I had both of the girls.  I love that color-it is bright, feminine, and of course has the perfect name for a woman about to hold her tiny baby daughter.  I thought it only appropriate for Harper's first manicure.  I trimmed her nails after her bath and we sat at the kitchen table and painted her little fingernails.  They took one dip per hand-ha!

She seemed to enjoy it too.  Today at ballet I had the best time watching her and thought how I was meant to have girls.  Harper loves to play outside and pick up worms and (gulp) mice, but at the same time she runs around in princess costumes and heels.  Here she is showing off her nails.

sleeping babes

Probably any mom's favorite view of her children is when they are asleep.  I'm always nervous to snap pictures for fear of waking the girls, but I couldn't resist last night.  I tiptoed into each room...

and they slept right through it.

1 and 3 year checkups

We had the girls' checkups this week and they did great, as usual.  I LOVE our pediatrician and as soon as we walk in, she greets the girls and knows them so well.  I feel that these days, that is a special thing to have.  Sometimes when it is just Kate, Dr. P accidentally calls Kate "Harper" because she thinks they are so alike.

Harper walked right into the doctor's office and yelled out, "Dr. Chaney (our other pediatrician), we're heeeeeere!  Come and fix us!"  It was a hoot.

So they weighed in a 19 lbs. for Kate and 28 lbs. for Harper (both in the 25th percentile), and 30" long for Kate and 38" high for Harper (both in the 50-75th percentiles).  They're both right on the mark for their growth charts:  petite Wallaces.  They may be small physically, but these girls have BIG ambitions.  I'm having a hard time taming!

So now comes the weaning for Kate.  I'm taking away one bottle a week, so we should be finished in a month.  I'm sad, but at the same time excited for her to have a little bit more independence-and NO MORE BOTTLES TO WASH!

Kate's 1st Birthday Party

I've been meaning to post some pictures of Kate's 1st birthday party.  Brian's mom was here for a while and then we went out of town for Easter, so I've been busy busy.

We kept things pretty simple this year.  I remember when I tried to make all 48 of Harper's 1st birthday party cupcakes by scratch and I ended up melting them in the oven 15 minutes before the party because I didn't have enough counter space to store them so I thought, "why not the oven?"  So anyway, we ordered a honeybaked ham for lunch, ordered cupckaes from the grocery store, made a few sides and appetizers, and decorated the place for a bunny birthday party.  I made bunny and carrot sugar cookies for favors.

I ordered this cupcake dress for her when she was just born.  I saw it on Smocked Auctions on Facebook and thought it would be so cute for her 1st birthday.  She can also wear it to other birthday parties.

I strung her monthly photos up out of order on the mantel for a guessing game.  We also opened presents and attempted to watch a video diary of her first year (that was a big fail due to technical difficulties).

I made these cute cupcake toppers that I ordered from Etsy.

I made her a bunny cake to smash, but she just screamed at it and everyone who was singing "happy birthday" to her.  Ha!

It was so sad and cute at the same time because she rarely gets upset about things and is usually very social.  Oh my goodness, she was wailing and wanted nothing to do with the cake-smashing or eating.  Classic.

We just had a few friends over this time and I think this will be the way to go from here on out.  Big parties have been wearing me out (exhibit A:  cupcake story).  But, it was so nice to have Brian's mom here to help out, and we so loved having a day to celebrate our girl.

Easter 2012

We had a lovely Easter weekend with our friends Lisa and Andy in Virginia.  We drove out Saturday morning and stayed through Easter lunch on Sunday.  We dyed eggs, went on an egg hunt, let the kids run around and play, and had just a great time talking late into the night.

The kids loved their Easter baskets.  But WHY oh WHY do we parents torture ourselves with these things?  I don't mean the preparation; I'm mean the aftermath.  I think we all know what I'm talking about:  "mom, I WANT CANDY!"  I limited the candy to a box of Peeps and 5 Mini Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs, but still.  Ha!  Next year, no candy.  I end up eating it all anyway.

The girls made it for about an hour through church, but then they'd had it!  I don't think they are getting it yet.  Today on our way home from school, she told me that Jesus turned into an Easter bunny.  Oh my, Harper.  I can't wait for her to finally start Sunday school this year!

Happy Easter!

Kate is 1 Year Old

Say it isn't so, Kate.  You are one.  I picked you up this morning, held you in my arms with your cheek pressed to mine, and while I smelled your lovely baby smell I closed my eyes and thought back to the day you were born.  I thought of going to the hospital, knowing I would hold you soon.

I thought of seeing you for the first time and the tears your daddy and I shared when he showed you to me.

I thought of holding you in my arms and how quickly you nursed and bonded with me.

I thought of holding you to my skin for the few days we were in the hospital and how much that one day changed our lives.  You are the light of our lives and we love you so much.

I feel so amazingly blessed by God to have you and your sister in our family.  Words could never express my gratitude.  Or my absolute love for you.

Kate, at one year old you

  • Weigh ?? (we'll go to the doctor this week)
  • Are so healthy-which is why we don't have your weight-ha!  I'll get it and update
  • Wear 12 month clothes and size 3 diapers
  • Eat well-you really prefer finger foods but eat pretty much everything.  You LOVE avocados.  Those are your new love.
  • Say "ba-ba," "mama," and "dada"  You really only say them when you're upset and want one of us.  But they're clear as day now and you're officially a talker, girl.
  • You babble all day long.  You really only take a pacifier in bed and I think that's why you're always talking.
  • Love to clap your hands.  You clap when you're happy and excited-and that is a lot!  Ha!
  • Go to sleep on your own so well.  You take your bottle and want in your bed as soon as it is gone.  Sometimes you talk and play in your crib before you fall asleep, but I haven't put you to bed asleep in months.  I love it and hate it, though, because I do not get that night time snuggle time with you.  But I'll take it!
  • Sleep through the night, from 7-7 and take two naps a day.  You are on a schedule and it makes you such a happy girl.  I'm all for the schedule!
  • Play so well with Harper.
  • Climb!  You are past walking and now are into climbing-stairs, furniture, and toys
  • Are such a happy girl, Kate.  You have been a wonderful baby and now I guess you're a toddler!  You are the perfect piece for our family.
