Harper's First Day of Preschool

Harper started preschool today.  It was a wonderful day for all of us.  I was so excited to see her go play and learn with new people, and she was thrilled to be there.

We got up, ate some breakfast, and brushed her teeth.  She got dressed and carried her backpack to the car for school (after some front-porch pictures, of course).  On our way to school she told me that she was going to play in the sandbox; I couldn't believe she remembered it from 3 months ago.  She carried her backpack on her back and walked right to her classroom.

When we got there, she went to play and never looked back.  I had to go interrupt her for a kiss and a "bye, mommy."  It is a great feeling to see her excited about school and so social with everyone.

When I picked her up I of course started the mom thing with "what did you do at school?"  I got a few things like, ate oranges, played with a ball, and sang wheels on the bus.  She's so funny.  I will note that she is now calling me "momma" because she said she heard a boy crying for his momma but that she'd be right back.  She's also started singing "Ol' McDonald" 5 million times perfectly even though I've sang that to her for 2 1/2 years, probably a million times myself.  So funny.

I'm so proud of my little Harper.  She'll be going twice a week this year and I look forward to all of the fun things she'll learn and do.

Harper is 2 1/2 years old

Oh my, Miss Harper!  You are two and a half years old.  I'm trying not to think about it too much or I'll cry.  You're growing up so fast and before I know it you'll be 3!  I told Brian the other night that I feel like fall is just starting to come into the air (after which we had a debate about when fall starts) and that I'm usually excited about it.  I'm not excited about it this year because it makes me think that you and Kate are just getting older.  Can you imagine me in 3 years when you start kindergarten?  I am trying to take time and reflection to experience and enjoy everything about you because I know it will go by fast.

So, at 2 1/2 you

  • wear 3T clothes, size 4 diapers, and weigh around 27 pounds
  • have the cutest blond wavy and curly hair and pretty pouty lips
  • aren't potty-trained yet and defiantly refused to do so a few weeks ago; we'll try again soon
  • are a great eater; you eat well, but of course mostly a few toddler-approved options like chicken patties and macaroni and cheese.  You eat vegetables like broccoli, sweet potatoes, and peas.  You eat 3 square meals and two snacks a day.
  • still looooove Buzz, Woody, and Jesse from toy story.  Just today you noticed that Jesse wasn't with her trio and you told me you needed to get her from the playroom.
  • (speaking of telling) talk up a storm and have a great vocabulary.  You remember words you've only heard once or twice and it surprises me; some of those surprise words are "coyote," "bandaid," and "triceratops"
  • love to read books; you have about 200 of them and your current favorites are Finding Nemo, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp, and Dumbo (Disney, anyone?)
Reading Dumbo to Kate
  • will start preschool next week and I'm so excited for you to learn and play
  • are usually so good but have a rough time when we close your door for bed time.  You always cry for about 5 minutes-usually for "mooooooommmmmyyyyy"
  • went to the dentist and have all of your 20 baby teeth
  • love Gymboree, though we'll be switching out of it soon due to your age and development.  You are kind of a leader and are very athletic
your Gymboree teacher, Miss Marissa, has been your teacher for 2 years
    • can do a forward roll (though no one has ever shown you how)
    • love Georgia and actively play fetch and tug-a-war with her.  You give her hugs and tickle her too.  She loves you too!  She always wants to help put you to bed.
    • have some favorite shows like Yo Gabba Gabba, Fresh Beat Band, Dora, and Go Diego Go.
    • have some favorite songs from The Ting Tings, The Fresh Beat Band, Keller Williams, and Yo Gabba Gabba; you also sing those songs all of the time, along with This Little Light of Mine, Jesus Loves Me, Mockingbird, and ABC's
    • love the pool and even put your face under sometimes
    • are a dancing machine!  You absolutely love to dance, I think more than anything.
    • do art about once a day; you love to paint, color, and most of all glue
      marker mayhem
    • have more energy than any two year old I've ever seen
    • are so sweet and friendly.  You remember everyone and are so loving and usually sharing.  You take joy in giving to others.
making a birthday card for daddy
You are such a joy!  You make us laugh every day.  We love you more than we ever thought we could.

without a hitch-Brian keeps the girls overnight

I went to my sister's this weekend in Ohio for some pre wedding (more on that later) while Brian kept the girls by himself for the first time.  I was so excited to go, but of course sad to leave my babies.  Harper is easy to keep and I knew she wouldn't miss a beat; Kate, on the other hand, is a mommy's girl so I didn't know how it would go.

Brian took the girls to the pool TWICE-with some friends, of course.  He's brave!

It went great!  I thought I'd be getting phone calls the whole time, but of course I overstressed and everyone did great.  Kate only woke up at 1 am to eat and then slept until 7.  She took all of her naps and bottles perfectly and I was so relieved.

Kate enjoying the pool (in the best stroller ever invented-it reclines all the way back with a wonderful canopy)

This sounds cheesy, but I also think this was a wonderful time for father-daughter bonding.  Brian works hard and is a wonderful dad, but this was fatherhood on a whole new level.  I love to see him loving on his girls.

watching morning cartoons and waiting for mommy in our bed (look at Kate's face-ha!)

He sent me these pictures over the weekend.  Wonderful reassurance!

    Kate is 4 months old

Kate turned 4 months old today.  Time is flying by, but I honestly can't imagine life without her.  She is such a sweet and happy little girl.

    Kate, at 4 months you:

    • Weigh about 13 lbs. (we'll get an exact weight next week at your checkup)
    • Wear a size 2 diaper and 6 months clothes or 9 mos. pajamas
    • Eat at 7, 10, 1, 4, 7, 11, and usually again at 5:30 (sometimes you want a little snack at 2 am).  You don't sleep through the night anymore but I honestly don't mind.  When you take a bottle, you take about 4 oz.
    • Sleep!  You sleep from 7 pm until 7 am and nap 2 to 3 times a day.  You sleep in your own bed for naps and nighttime and you talk yourself to sleep.  I tried the soothing thing with you but it was overwhelming trying to put two girls to bed each night (often by myself).  So we tried "cry it out" for a couple of nights and it worked for you!  You're a champion, Kate!  I put you down at 7 while you're awake and you talk for a little while and then go to sleep.  It makes bed time stress-free for everyone!
    • Are very ticklish and smile and laugh when we tickle you.
    • Watch your sister and me all day long.  You love to observe.  As long as you can see us, you're pretty happy
    • Enjoy bath time very much.  Harper sometimes helps wash your feet and legs and you just stare at her.
    • Rolled over last week.  You've rolled over a few times!
    • Started grabbing your feet today
    • drool like crazy.  Your sister was a big drooler, so it is no surprise that you are too. Bring on the bibs!
    • Suck your fingers.
    • babble the most at night after your 7 o'clock feeding.
    • love your baby k'tan sling.  I took you and Harper to the aquarium on Monday and you were in it so quietly for 2 hours.  You can't wait to face "out"; you're always turning your head to look around.
    • still love your mommy over daddy and I'm positive it is because you're still nursing
You are so cute, inside and out.  I can already see your personality coming out.  We love you!

    One month
    Two months
    Three months

    Four months

    Harper at 4 months

Kate and Harper are finally getting a little closer.  I think Harper can finally connect with her because she gets a reaction.  Harper tickles her, give her her pacifier, sings to her, reads to her, and (if I beg or bribe) gives her hugs and kisses.  I love my girls!  Happy 4 months, Kate!

    Kate rolls over

Look at this little munchkin on her belly!  She rolled over and has rolled a few other times too.  It is so cute to see her growing, but knowing she's my last one makes these milestones a little bitter-sweet.

Speaking of growing up, we went to a birthday party on Saturday for Harper's friend Barrett's 3rd birthday.  He's in our playgroup and seeing him turn 3 made me realize:  our little toddlers are becoming KIDS!  Harper and Luke are in this picture brushing one of the ponies at the party.  They had a pony to brush and put bows on (oh, Harper loved the pink bows on the pony) and a pony to ride.

This is her putting another pink bow on the pony

and this is her when I asked her if she wanted to ride the pony:

Ha!  All in all it was a wonderful party.  Harper was pretty cranky because we skipped a nap (bad move), but she loved being with her friends.
