Harper goes to the dentist

Harper had her first visit to the dentist yesterday and it was a hoot!  I had her so excited to meet the dentist and show her her teeth.  We practiced at home and I told her we'd go get some ice-cream afterwards.  We went by ourselves while Paige kept Kate.  It was so fun for us to have an afternoon with just the two of us.

We got to the dentist's office and Harper walked in, talking up a storm to everyone.  She was pointing out all of the sailboat pictures and ceiling-mounted post-cards and had everyone in the office giggling at the bow-clad naive two year-old.  She walked into the room and got up in the big green chair and then...realized she was in the BIG GREEN CHAIR (cue dark music).  She immediately wanted out.  From there, the hygienist explained that Harper would sit on my lap facing me and lay back into the dentist's lap. She did NOT enjoy this at all and screamed and held me so tight.  She has never acted like this before (except maybe once with the Chik-fil-a cow).  The dentist said her teeth look great and to keep brushing them.  Harper was VERY excited to go pick her two toys from the treasure box and she left there a happy little girl.

We went to get some frozen yogurt afterwards (pink, of course, because "God bless pink ice-cream) and then went to the grocery store.  I had so much fun one-on-one with her and I love my sweet girl.

On another note, I went to the doctor today for my kidney stones and I am healthy.  I am so glad.  I have a couple of little stones still there, but they'll leave them.  They are going to run some tests to see how we can prevent them, so that makes me very happy and hopeful.  My girls were soooo good today at the doctor; I was nervous to take both of them to a specialist's office, but they were both angels.

God Bless Diapers

Well, we went into Friday morning with determination and hope for a potty-trained two-year old.  By day two, she seemed to be making some progress, recognizing when she had to go and showing control over both #1 and #2.  She showed that she could start and stop it and had the "tell" of crossing her legs and looking at us sideways.
we spent the whole weekend in our pajamas Sunday morning she hated the little potty and could care less if Elmo went on the potty, she got M&M's, or she earned stickers for her chart.  It was a mess.  I didn't mind cleaning up after her, but she was acting out and I think it was too much pressure for her.  Sunday night we were at our wit's end and she was worse off than when we started.  So, we're going to start again in a few weeks, perhaps with a little bit easier of an approach.  I'm also thinking when she starts preschool next month and sees other kids going she'll get into it.

I have to say, bless her heart, she was a mess this weekend.  Harper is the light of my life and when we put that diaper back on her last night, we were all so relieved.  She was back to her old self again.  Oh good grief.  She's mentioned the potty a few times today, but has no desire to go in there and use it.

So, tonight as we were saying prayers in her room before bed, she had me cracking up when she said at the end, "God bless diapers."  How hilarious is that?  She's said funny things like that before (like, "God bless pink ice cream"), but that takes the cake.  I could say nothing else but, "amen."

Potty Time!

We are starting potty training tomorrow and I'm both nervous and excited.  I hope it all works out.  I have quite the arsenal set up for tomorrow.  I have 3 books, a potty chart, 2 little potties, M&M's, and 20 pair of Dora, Minnie, Yo Gabba Gabba, and Fancy Nancy 2T/3T underwear.

I'm prepared for many, many Harper?

This marker fiasco was one of those "I-just-turned-around-for-a-second" moments.  I was laughing so hard I started crying.  I kept trying to hide it from her, but it was too late.  Oh my...

This sweet potato has been growing and growing.  She was sucking her thumb a few times today and I thought it was so grown up!  Ha!

She also started rolling with laughter on Tuesday morning and I started crying.  Her laugh sounds just like Harper's laugh and it took me by surprise.  It was the first time she laughed and laughed and it was hilarious.  She is such a cheery little girl.  She slept through the night again last night-finally-I think because I gave her a bottle of breast milk.  She was doing great for a long time, but I think my milk supply is low in the evenings.  So we're trying that again tonight to see if it works again.

Winnie the Pooh

We took Harper to her first movie today and it was fantastic!  Winnie the Pooh was the perfect first movie movie and it couldn't have gone better.

We skipped a nap because the weather has been just too beautiful lately to sleep through.  After a morning of playing in the backyard and swimming at the pool with friends, we headed to the movie theater as a family.  Our plan was to just bring Kate in to the movie with the idea that I could leave and walk around the shopping center with Kate while Brian stayed with Harper, should things get hectic.  Kate slept through the whole movie in her sling, so I got to enjoy the movie too!

First, Harper handed her movie ticket to the girl at the ticket booth.  Then, she and Brian went to the snack bar to get popcorn and candy!  Harper loves popcorn, so she was excited.

I think at first she didn't know what to think of things-even though she'd been saying "pooh" all afternoon.  We ran into some friends, so we all got to sit together.  One thing we learned today is that the movie theater has booster seats.  So Brian got some booster seats for the kids and we all settled in for the movie.  Harper ate her popcorn, sat on Brian's lap for a little while and then something happened.  Harper left Brian to go sit next to...a boy.  Ha!  She decided that she wanted to sit next to Ryder.  Too cute.  I got a few shots before the movie, but I couldn't take any good ones during the movie-for obvious reasons.

Here are Meaghan and Ryder

Here's a picture of when we first sat down, before the booster seat.

Harper loved the movie and did so well the whole time.  It seems kind of silly to get all mushy over a movie, but that was a very special time for us.  Every once in a while, Brian and I exchange looks over something about our lives (the last time was when he brought Kate to meet me for the first time), and this was one of those times.  It was a very sweet day for us.

Weekend update

We had a great weekend and it went by fast!  First, Drew came to visit to wrap up some med-school stuff.  We love it when he visits-especially Harper.  He is such a sweet friend.

double-take?  This is NOT Kate-it's Harper and Drew back in 2009
Also on Friday I met up with some friends for a play date at the mall.  I never let Harper play at mall playgrounds, buuuuut, this is a new playground for just 3 and under kids and it is so nice.  After that, the kids rode the train.  Alec rode with Harper so I could stay with Kate and all of the strollers.
Kate and I entertaining ourselves; she was cracking herself up!

Riding the train with all of the girls

On Saturday, after Drew left, we went to Meaghan and Kevin's pool in Annapolis with Lindsay and Mark and all of the kids.  That was so nice to just chill at the pool all afternoon.  After a quick stop at Meaghan and Kevin's, we went to Mexican Cafe for dinner.  Kate did pretty well considering we had her outside for about 5 hours that day.  She and Maddy enjoyed each other while Harper and Ryder played.  Harper loves Ryder and was talking about him all evening.  I wish I had a picture of them.  He's a-dor-a-ble.  On another note-Kate slept 12 hours last night (7 to 7) and it was wonderful!  We are going for that again tonight.

Madlyn and Kate (sorry it is a blurry iphone picture)

Today we went to church, breakfast, and babies-r-us.  Brian kept the girls during nap time and I met up with friends for pedicures.  That was wonderful.  After nap time, Brian popped popcorn and watched a little movie with Harper.  How cute!  We're planning on taking her to see her first movie next weekend:  Winnie the Pooh.  It is only an hour long and supposed to be a great "first movie" movie.  I think we're all going to go.  Brian is SO excited.  Who knew that Brian Wallace would one day be excited to go see Winnie the Pooh in the movie theater?  I love it!

Katy bug playing with some tummy time.  Oh my, she looks JUST LIKE HARPER DID!  Need proof?  here:

They seriously look more and more like each other every day.  I guess we'll have another mini-brian around here.
After movie time today, I got out some art supplies for Harper.  I bit the bullet and bought markers for Harper and she loved them.  I've been a little timid about giving her markers...for obvious reasons.  I came over and couldn't believe it-she was drawing circles!  That's a pretty big deal for her because it is usually scribble.

yes, she likes to line up her markers standing up.
She's very particular about how things are organized...remind you of anyone?

I walked away to get her dinner ready, so proud of my little braniac and when I turned around...

So, that was our weekend.  The girls are sleeping, and we're watching Big Brother and relaxing with our latest houseguest-our cute neighbor Sawyer.

I'll just end with a puzzle (and another line of toys that Harper made).  Which of these things is not like the other?  Good night!

Mimi and Pop visit in July

Lost luggage didn't phase Mimi and Pop's joy on their recent visit to see the girls (oh, and us too).  They were thrilled to see them and the feeling was mutual.

We had a great time together and even had some room for adult-time.  One night, Susan and I went to eat downtown while the guys kept the girls.  Another day, the guys went to a game to see the Nationals "play" the Cubs  (the Nats lost horribly).  Mimi and Pop also watched the girls while Brian and I had a date night.
Mimi brought Harper and Kate these matching outfits-they're SO cute!

Harper had fun showing off her little sister.  It is funny:  when other people are around, she acts pretty proud of her big-sister status.

Mimi had fun getting to know Kate.  Kate loves to sit outside on your lap and look around at everything.

They were our cheerleaders during the corn-hole game of Me and Brian vs. Pop and Jared.
We bet a carwash and Brian and I won!  Home-field advantage...

Harper and Mimi rode the train at the mall-Harper's favorite car is the yellow car.
Mimi gave Harper a pony-tail.  It made her look all grown up.

We went to the July 4th parade, where Harper and Pop shared ice cream and then Harper got scared of the big firetrucks so we had to leave.  Oh well, we had fun anyway.

We were definitely wiped out but had an absolute blast!  This is at the end of the day when Harper is in her pajamas.  I tell Brian that we never get family pictures; we finally got one and we all looked exhausted!  Ha!

Harper has been going and going and it has caught up with her.  She had a nasty skinned knee and donned her very first bandaid last week.  Then, this morning she fell and hit her nose and it was bleeding everywhere.  She's a little swollen and I'm hoping it doesn't give her a black eye.  Ew.  Oh well, that's life right now.

We had so much fun visiting and look forward too seeing them very soon!  They're going to bravely watch the girls later this year while we go out of town for a wedding.  I'm a little bit scared for them because they are a lot of work.  I'll start writing their survival guide NOW!

Thank you for a wonderful visit!  We love you!
